Sibling, Twin Zygosity, Paternity and Grandparentage DNA Testing

Health-Link offers a full range of DNA testing services including sibling DNA testing, grandparentage, and twin zygosity as well as paternity, maternity, prenatal, and infidelity-semen detection and drug testing. Sibling testing is often utilized for people wishing to prove brother/sister, brother/brother, or sister/sister biological relationships. Paternity testing of siblings is also employed for indirect paternity cases in which the father is missing or deceased and there are no biological samples of his DNA. When alleged siblings want to know whether they have one or both parents in common this test can be administered to show full or half siblingship. DNA testing siblings for a full biological relationship is performed when the individuals have the same mother but would like to know if they also share a father. A half sibling test is done when the individuals do not have the same mother but would like to know if they share a father. DNA sibling testing requires collecting buccal cheek swab samples from both siblings and a parent if available. It is not compulsory but the addition of one common parent helps to increase the accuracy of the analysis. Health-Link encourages the involvement of the mother in order to increase the probability of siblingship results. As an accredited AABB testing company, all of our paternity testing of siblings may be used for legal purposes such as evidence in Social Security benefit and inheritance claims.
Another way to establish a family relationship when a father’s biological sample is not available for a paternity test is a DNA grandparentage test. Like the siblingship test, these test results may also be used as evidence in court cases and in other legal forums. Grandparent DNA testing may also be performed for the sake of settling family questions in determining whether or not a couple are the biological grandparents of a child. Once the child’s DNA profile is ascertained it is then compared to the profiles of the alleged father’s biological parents. If it matches the paternal grandparents DNA test profiles the child is considered biologically related to the grandparents and to the alleged father. The mother’s participation in this genetic DNA test is also encouraged to increase the efficiency of analysis and decrease its associated costs. However, the mother is not required to participate.
We also perform twin zygosity DNA testing to determine whether twins are fraternal or identical. Despite appearances, the twin zygosity DNA test is the only means of accurately determining if twins are identical. The status of twins DNA testing can impact health issues down the road in the case of tissue or organ transplant in deciding whether the other twin is a suitable donor for the other. In a twin zygosity DNA test the twins profiles are compared to find an exact match which proves their identical status or which proves they are fraternal.
