The DNA testing procedure to prove paternity, or the biological basis of inheritance between a father and a child, is one of the most common DNA tests performed. In the standard paternity test procedure Health-Link takes DNA samples from the child, mother, and alleged father which are then purified and test-prepared by a series of DNA markers (more complicated tests are also done without the mother and/or father). These markers help to produce an individual genetic profile for each person tested which are then compared to determine DNA inheritance.

We use this DNA testing information to calculate the statistical probability of paternity, which measures the likelihood of a biological relationship. Health-Link runs all of its testing twice in order to avoid error and ensure proper handling and analysis. Absolute DNA testing accuracy is assured through our chain of custody testing process which includes the use of buccal swabs to painlessly collect accurate DNA paternity test information from the inside cheek of participants. Especially preferred for those who have had recent blood transfusions and bone marrow transplants (because their blood might contain the donor’s DNA), the buccal swab is as effective at obtaining accurate DNA testing results as blood testing.

Because it is impossible to DNA test every other man world-wide excluding the father, a paternity test calculates the probability of paternity using a population database. The paternity test results either return an inclusion or exclusion outcome. If the father is included it will produce a probability of 99.99% and above, if he is excluded the result is always 0%. In addition to the probability of paternity, the DNA paternity testing procedure results information table also contains a Combined Paternity Index value (CPI) representing the chance of an untested male having a similar outcome as the father.
